Drag and Cabaret

Drag and cabaret performance is an important part of my practice. The focus on music primarily draws me to these spaces, and their less-formal contexts offer a greater freedom of exploration which can be crucial to creative development. It is also a vital opportunity to blend my visual and performance practices. The performance modes I most often utilize for these pieces include lipsyncing, movement, live singing and speech.
You can sometimes find me performing in drag and cabaret spaces under the name Lauryl Sulfate.

Robot Body is a video I made at home during the 2021 quarantine in which my civilian and drag personas lament, dance and mourn to Sappho’s song of the same name. I made it in an effort to express my frustration with disability and chronic health issues, while giving myself a transformative outlet to embody a joyful self I felt disconnected from at the time.
